Females on Men Teams...NO

Over the course of the entire semester my SM425 class discussed frequently women playing on men teams. There were many mixed emotions. I say the opinions were about half and half. Personally, I don't think women should be allowed to play on men teams at all. Physically they can not compete with men at all. Recently, the NBA commissioner David Stern said he thinks there will be a woman in the NBA in the next 10 years. I think not. Just imagine Candace Parker who plays power forward/center tries to guard Dwight Howard who also plays center. There's a reason why the NBA is so much better than the WNBA. If women had equal talent as men in sports then I think women sports would be equally popular to men sports. If a woman played on a men's team how would she get dressed in the locker room. I heard many stories of women reporters being harassed and even assaulted by men in the locker rooms, so why even put her in that situation. Women can't run, jump, swim, hit, or throw better than men. I'm not being sexist, I'm being a realist!!!!!!

  1. I'm not going to say that women are better than men at sports neccesarily, but they have just as much talent and skills as the men do.In the WNBA and the NBA the talent level and skill level are the same. That's not the problem. The problem is the size difference. The NBA players outweigh the WNBA players by 100 lbs,and they are stronger and more athletic. As far as whether the women would be safe in the NBA lockerroom, you can't compare WNBA players with female reporters.WNBA players do the same strength and conditioning regimen that the NBA players do,and they do the same rigorous training. And the average NBA player is only 4-6 inches taller than the average WNBA player,so the WNBA players would not be as vulnerable to an attack as a reporter would be.Plus, a lot of the NBA players and WNBA players know each other well. Some of them grew up in the same neighborhood, some of them are the children of former NBA players and met through their parents,a lot of them have played for USA Basketball and gone to the Olympics,a lot of them play in the same arenas as professionals, and even some of the NBA and WNBA legends know some of the current players personally. So I seriously doubt that any assaults would happen if they were on the same team. Some of the WNBA players even have siblings and spouses in the NBA.

  2. I'm not sure who posted the above response, but I could not have said it better. The one thing I want to bring up when it comes to the disparity in size is this: not every male in the NBA is built like Dwight Howard. Did you ever hear of Muggsy Bogues or Spud Webb? If not, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhCw_7IIjIY
